A good harness makes walks easier for both of you. A bad fit makes them frustrating. Here is how to choose with confidence.
Step-in or vest style?
Step-in harnesses are light and quick: your dog steps into the loops and you fasten it on the back. They suit small dogs and dogs that dislike things pulled over their head. Vest harnesses spread the pressure over a wider area and often include a handle on top, which is handy for busy sidewalks or steps.
Browse two good starting points: the Adjustable Padded Dog Harness Vest with Handle and the Step-In Dog Harness with Reflective Strips.
How to measure
Use a soft tape measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs, and note your dog's weight. Compare both numbers with the size chart on the product page. If your dog is between sizes, choose the larger one and use the adjustable straps.
How to check the fit
- You should be able to slide two fingers under any strap.
- The harness should not twist or slide to one side.
- Nothing should rub behind the front legs.
Common mistakes
- Buying by the dog's age or breed instead of measurements.
- Leaving straps too loose, so the harness shifts on every step.
- Skipping the first at-home try-on. Let your dog wear it indoors with a treat before the first walk.
Visibility matters
If you walk in the morning or after dark, look for reflective strips so drivers and cyclists can see you from further away.
